need advice (repost)
http://treasure.craigslist.org/cto/2428017640.html
182k miles on it mostly highway. older guy, only owner bought it new, only driver, towed 15k# trailer once.
he worked for a company that did work in other states as well, thats where most of the miles.
4wd was used no more than 10 times, never been off road.
only thing ever replaced on it was left front wheel bearing.
The guy said he always serviced it every 2500 miles. Ill try to see what his bottom line is. If I can get him to around 7k I'll be happy. He said he needs the money, so well see what happens, I'm not gonna go down there til I have the money. I don't wanna waste gas, nor his time either.
hes willing to negotiate on the price.
advice/suggestions?

I would doubt the statement of servicing every 2500 miles. Not many folks maintain their vehicles to that extent, especially in a slow economy and diesels are more exspensive then gas to do maitenance on. When was maintenance last done? Look it over carefully to see if there is any indication of abnormal use. When it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't true. Sounds like a excellent find. Good luck..

You could always do an oil check and see if their are shavings in the oil. A test will tell you a lot about the motor. I am one of those people who believe in 2500 mile oil changes and if he drove his truck out of state he may have been a person not wanting any troubles and did change the oil every 2500. Good Luck on the price. If this is the truck you want, go get her.

Cory, I think Paul means to check the oil yourself for any obvious issues...dirty, metal shavings in it, etc. But like Paul said, if the guy was driving out of state that much he may have done regular maintenance to avoid possible issues on the road. Then again without service records, Greg could be correct as well. This is one of those things in which you have to satisfy your own concerns and "feel" it.
There are Cummins with 300k and 400k miles on them. Hell, there are Cummins with 800k and 900k miles on them.
Good luck in your decision.

That's true. What do you think pricewise? Good or bad?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be dicouraging. But when I get perfect answers to the basic questions one asks about a vehicle and there is nothing to back it up I get nervous. I like the 3/4 ton single wheel better then the 1 ton's. If it is in good shape inside and the mechanicals are good. I'd go with the book and try to knock what I could from the price. Usually you can get $1500 off. If he is over book, I'd try to explain that without exceptional documentation it simply isn't worth it and walk away. Good luck..

Ya, as of right now he's at 12,500 til friday i guess, he had it originally at 13,500, he said book value is 18,000. I'll double check it though. And I asked him if he was firm on it, and he said he could negotiate a bit, said he really didn't wanna sell it, that he loves the truck, but he needs the money. And doesn't have a use for it anymore.

Have you looked at it yet to determine if it's in good, fair or excellent condition? That's really going to be the determining factor. That, and a test drive. Is it close to you?
I understand book values but something is only worth what someone will pay for it. Another consideration might is how long has it been for sale. If a long time, why hasn't someone bought it yet, etc. Something else...if it books at $18k, why is he selling it for $6k under. And I would always offer less than asking price, worst he can say is no, then you counter offer. If you have cash in hand, most will always take less.
You may have found a POS or a gem, hard to say. You're gonna have to lay eyes on it, sit in the seat and drive it. What I'm getting at is that it appears to be a good deal on paper. But ultimately you're taking a risk that it's as good as he says it is, and you have to check it out for as much peace of mind as you can get.
It's a tough decision.
